The Best Chocolate Chip Parfait Cookies

Have you ever heard of chocolate chip parfait cookies? I’m always on the lookout for a new recipe to make chocolate chip cookies. When I think of a cookie, the first one that I think about is a chocolate chip cookie.

The second choice for new recipes would be my pumpkin cookie. Have you ever been to Jacob Lake in Northern Arizona? Well, they have a beautiful camping area up in the pine trees, and some of the best cookies in the world on display in their lodge.

You can tell they have good stuff by the full parking lot and all the people sitting outside eating cookies on the benches and rock formations. It’s a halfway mark from southern Utah to Flagstaff, Arizona. They also have a gift shop in the lodge and a large restaurant.

There are always lines of people waiting to buy their cookies. Who would guess we would pay dearly for cookies when we can make them at home? These cookies are different and delicious!

First of all, the cookies are huge and a bit pricey, but we all buy them because we need to stop for a potty break, stretch our legs, and get a snack after driving for two hours on a two-lane road with speed limits of 65 miles an hour or less.

I decided to update and repost this chocolate chip parfait cookies recipe because it is my and my family’s favorite! These cookies are soft and chewy and you can never eat just one. They are so delicious! Who doesn’t love homemade cookies, right?

They have cookies of all kinds to please any palate. They have a cookie called “Chocolate Parfait” that’s our family’s favorite. I have been working on a recipe to duplicate that cookie for months. It’s here!!

You may wonder where the word Parfait comes from, I did a little research and this is what I found. I quote the Salt Lake Tribune, “In French, “parfait” means perfect,” which is what chocolate lovers will likely call this cookie.

Ingredients – Chocolate Chip Parfait Cookies

  • Butter (softened): Due to the fat content, butter helps to produce a softer cookie and enriches the flavor. It helps to keep the cookies from crumbling. Butter prevents the eggs and any other moisture from evaporating, which creates moist, soft, and velvety chocolate chip parfait cookies.
  • Granulated Sugar: Used to maintain moisture, creating a softer cookie, and adding sweetness and flavor.
  • Eggs: We need the egg to bind the dough together and help the cookies rise.
  • All-Purpose Flour (I use bread flour): All-purpose white flour has a lower protein content. Bread flour has more protein, which helps to hold the shape of the cookies and adds more nutrients.
  • Salt: It adds texture, and brings out the flavor in the cookie dough.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds and enhances the flavors of butter, sugar, eggs, and chocolate chips.
  • Chocolate Chips: Chocolate chips add an extra sweet taste and texture to the cookies.

Step Two – Cream Together Butter, Sugar, Egg, Salt, and Vanilla

In a large bowl, cream the butter, sugar, egg, salt, and vanilla together and set at slow to medium speed. I used my KitchenAid Mixer, but you could also use a hand mixer to make these yummy cookies! You can use a Silpat mat, or parchment paper, or grease your cookie sheets.

Cream the butter and sugar

It will look like this after you whip (cream) it together.

Can I freeze these chocolate chip parfait cookies after baking them?

Yes, you can freeze these cookies. I would use freezer bags to keep them from drying out in the freezer.

I have never frozen the cookie dough with this recipe, so I can’t recommend it.

Can I substitute the milk chocolate chips with white chocolate chips in this chocolate chip parfait cookies recipe?

Yes, you can. I typically use dark chocolate chips because that’s what I stock. But white chocolate chips would be delicious too!

Can I make these chocolate chip parfait cookies with nuts added?

Absolutely, I don’t use nuts because I have a granddaughter who is allergic, but I love nuts in cookies!!

Can I make these chocolate chip parfait cookies Gluten-Free?

Yes, you can make these with Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose Gluten Free Flour. Use 1 cup of gluten-free flour in place of 1 cup of regular all-purpose flour.

As with any food allergy, I would highly recommend reviewing the ingredients on any product that you use in this recipe, or on any other packaging, if you decide to add additional ingredients. With the recipe made as is, the most common ingredient that would contain gluten is in the flour. Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose Gluten Free Flour is generally considered gluten-free and is a great alternative for those with gluten sensitivity. Please review any and all packaging if there is a dietary concern.

Besides making chocolate chip parfait cookies, what are some other parfait desserts?

It may be a play on words, but you can make all kinds of parfait desserts, including cookie parfaits. Most parfaits are made by layering various ingredients in a glass dish or bowl. I think that’s so you can see the yummy ingredient layers just before you jump in and eat them with gusto.

A cookie parfait could be made with crumbled cookies of any kind, including Oreo’s, then putting a layer of yogurt or pudding, fresh fruit, and whipping cream. Picture the delicious taste, and view, of this easy dessert.

You can easily make a “regular” parfait without the cookies by layering nuts, granola, crackers, yogurt, pudding, fruit, and whipping cream. The fun thing about a parfait is that you can switch out any of the ingredients to change the texture and flavor. One way to do that is to try different fresh fruits in season, like strawberries, peaches, blueberries, and more.

You can also try different kinds of nuts themselves, or by using different granola contents that include various nut varieties, along with different grains or flakes. What an adventure to mix and match all sorts of things, and count on everyone enjoying them!

Final Word

I hope you try making my chocolate chip parfait cookies! Cookies are such an easy treat to make, even if you’re new at baking. Let me know if you make them, you know I love to hear from you.

There is something about cooking from scratch and making homemade cookies with family and friends. It is important to teach the next generation how to cook from scratch, and this would be a great recipe to use in the training process. The kids will be so proud of what they helped make, and the whole family will enjoy eating them! Please keep stocking up, and sharpening your skills. May God Bless this world, Linda

These turned out delicious! I love the Jacob Lake parfait cookies, and went searching online for them. Thank you! I only had brown sugar and semi sweet morsels. They worked. However next time, I will follow the recipe. I’m just curious, the Jacob Lake one’s seem to have a cream cheese flavor, I’m wondering if they use cream cheese or something? What do you think?

I will definitely follow the recipe with white sugar and milk chocolate chips! They definitely had the texture and the flavor was almost there. If it’s still not quite there, I will sub in cream cheese for a portion of the butter and see what that does! I love those cookies. I have to visit there and get those cookies every time I visit my mom! I’m so happy to have a recipe. Thank you!

Linda, now you’ve done it. I’m going to get even fatter in a most delicious way. Thanks for this wonderful recipe. Currently my printer is disconnected. Actually my whole home is in chaos due to remodeling. But when I get it hooked up again I’ll print this out for Jane to try–and maybe I’ll even make some and surprise her.

    1. Hi Ray, thank you for the 5 stars, my friend! This month is heavy on desserts! It’s so awesome for all of us to get together again, right? Taking treats is the best! The remodel will be so worth it!! It’s hard when we go through a remodel, but it will so nice when it’s finished. These are so easy to make and they only make 36 cookies! Surprises are awesome! Linda

  3. Do you know how these cookies bake up so fluffy without baking soda or powder?? I’ve never tried to make cookies without it!

    1. Hi Suzanna, I know, right? I know they are so different from Toll House chocolate chip cookies. I used to make those but there were flat. It has to be the flour in these and how I scoop them, maybe??? They are so good! Linda

      1. Oh thank you for answering ! I will try the recipe, just wanted to first make sure there really was no b soda in it- thought it was a misprint! Lol
