Uses for Coconuts: 20 Genius Ideas
Coconuts are not just delicious tropical treats from coconut trees, but they also have a plethora of uses beyond their culinary applications. From practical to creative, coconuts can be utilized in various ways that you may not have even imagined. I want to share these 20 amazing uses for coconuts that will leave you wanting to fly to Florida and find a coconut laying right on the ground.
What are coconuts?
Although the name seems to tell you otherwise, coconuts aren’t really a nut, they’re a drupe. And what is a drupe you ask? A drupe is a type of fruit like peaches, plums, almonds, and cherries that have a hard inner layer surrounding the seed, with a fleshy outer layer, capped off with a thin skin layer called an exocarp. Drupes have just one single seed that is formed from a flower that has a single ovary and carpel, making it unique from other fruits like berries.
Like other drupes, the coconut grows on a tree, the coconut tree (Cocos nucifera), which is a member of the palm tree family. The name is derived from the old Portuguese word coco which means skull or head. When you look at the three small indentations on the shell you can see they look much like a human face and features.
What’s fun when learning about coconuts is you find out the tree is so versatile and provides not only food, but fuel for cooking and heating, building materials, popular cosmetics, soaps, and even folk medicines in some cultures. The coconut palm is found in many Asian and Indonesian countries, including the Philippines, but can be found in most tropical climates.

On a trip to Maui, I had coconut ice cream served in coconut shells. Memorable!!
Hi Leanne, oh that sounds so good! Yummy! I think mine had pineapple on the top as I remember! It’s so yummy! Linda
I love the taste of coconut and have a couple of recipes I use it in. The coconut water is something I’m not fond of, however. I had a chance to sample some and didn’t like that taste at all! It seems to be popular around here with the younger people and they can have it.
Hi Paula, I totally agree with you on the coconut water. I do not like it. I have younger family member that drink it. I tasted it once. Nope not ever again! LOL! Linda
Coconut shells can help with your biting insect problems, by helping barn swallows! Cut a cleaned shell in quarters, and securely fasten it to a wall or beam wherever barn swallows are interested in nesting. Since they re-use (and add to) existing nests year after year, the shell gives them a secure base. Barns, sheds, garages, etc., are all suitable spots. Just be sure you’ve situated the shell nest base away from where you don’t want bird poop (or at least where you can spread an old sheet or tarp underneath). Also be aware of possible predator attacks–cats included: situate the nest base away from where the cat, etc., can either climb or jump to reach it. Because they WILL.
You may find phoebes or other birds may also use these nest bases, which is also fine.
HI Rhonda, oh we had swallows a couple years in a row, what a mess. I finally cleaned it out after they migrated and placed lots of foil in the rain gutter they made as a home (6 feet long). I like the idea of using the coconut shells for nests! Linda
Hi Linda, love coconut! In old movies, cartoons and Broadway it always shows Polynesian women using them as a bra! Not sure if they really did/do but that’s my story and i’m sticking with it!
HI Bill-Bill, oh yeah baby, I have seen those used as a bra! Now, I have the giggles! Life is so good! Linda
